Nest makes two outdoor security cameras — the new Nest Cam Outdoor IQ and the Nest Cam Outdoor. Both allow you to easily monitor your outdoor space rain or shine. They are waterproof and durable. Nest Outdoor Cams plug into A/C power, so you don’t have to worry about dead batteries.

Nest Outdoor Cam IQ uses artificial intelligence to distinguish a person from an animal or car. You can get instant alerts on your phone or smart device when the surveillance camera detects motion or a loud sound. Activity zones allow you to get alerts for specific areas, like your front porch or driveway. Both cameras feature a built-in speaker and microphone. So, you can provide instructions for the delivery person or inform a burglar that you are calling the police.

Don’t worry if you miss alerts. With the Nest app, you can watch the past three hours of footage. Thumbnail images provide crucial snapshots of important events. So, you don’t have to watch an entire three hours of footage to see if anything important has happened. If you subscribe to the Nest Aware service, you can create and share video clips with neighbors, the police or anyone else. You can also create and share time-lapse videos.

These feature-rich, expertly designed cameras are tops in performance and tech, but are they worth the price?

In one way or another, we are all pretty well acquainted with Google. After the search engine giant’s acquisition of Nest Labs, which gave us the transformative Nest Thermostat in 2011,1 we’ve seen four generations of the thermostat released. Over the years, Google’s smart home ecosystem has grown by leaps and bounds to include, among others, the Google Home smart speaker, the Nest Hello doorbell, and Nest Cams.2

And it just so happens that nowadays, we’re seeing even greater interest in Nest products, as more folks are staying home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.3 With Nest Cams in particular, it’s easy to see why: these cameras are some of the smartest security products on the market, with plenty of high-tech features like facial recognition, automatic motion tracking, and 4K image sensing.

It all sounds quite lovely … until we get to the price tag. Let’s face it: they’re not cheap. Out of the four Nest Cams available, the lowest-price camera, the Nest Cam Indoor, starts at $130. While that might be reasonable for an indoor camera, we’ve seen a few sticker-shock reactions to the brand’s newer, tech-forward Nest IQ, which includes in its lineup an outdoor camera for $399.

Yes, $399. For one security camera. But don’t start sweating just yet; keep in mind that this is way more than a camera. As with many products in Google’s smart home ecosystem, the features and tech injected into these cameras – not to mention the fact that IQ Cams include a built-in Google Assistant – do justify a bump in price over other leading outdoor camera brands.

Today, we’ll dig deep into the equipment costs (which really aren’t so bad considering what you’re getting), but we’ll also break down subscriptions, packages, cloud storage plans, and current deals and discounts on Google Nest’s camera bundles. So let’s get to it!
